I was curious, does simply making a toon and not playing start your realm lock timer? Was thinking I'd like to secure some names but wouldn't be playing them for some time.

Yes. The 2 things that start the realm lock timer are:

1. Making a new toon
2. Logging into an existing toon

Visiting the character screen should be fine you just shouldnt login with one if you dont wanna play that realm. Even tho I only deleted one toon to use the name on another realm.

You can delete characters and not be locked.

If you create a character you're stuck for 12 hours.
